Appreciating the Golden Egg

For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His. Hebrews 4:10

You are probably familiar with Aesop’s fable of The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg. The story has variations but the essence of the tale is that a goose laid one golden egg every morning for a poor farmer and his wife. Believing that the goose must be filled with gold, the foolish farmer killed the goose and opened her body to discover only normal goose gizzards, not gold.

The usual moral warns against greed. Yesterday a friend tweaked the moral to warn against the impatience in a workaholic’s never ending drive for more achievements. Not celebrating the golden eggs of our daily accomplishments can compel us to strive for another and yet another egg from the day. We kill the goose – ourselves or maybe our faith, creativity, balance and harmony with God and others. (Read More)

Ageless Beauty

One of the most engaging and beautiful women I ever met was my neighbor Margaret Meyers.  Mrs. Meyers shared our shady street in Southern California.  We met one Christmas while caroling.  I still remember her opening her door and greeting us from her wheel chair.  As our group sang she sat beaming, holding our six month old daughter.

Did I mention that Mrs. Meyers was in her nineties when we met?  You may question my original description of her.  But I will argue that she was a beautiful woman.  She had the internal, eternal beauty that 1 Peter 3 describes as being precious to God. A beauty that is cultivated from a lifetime of loving – loving God and people.

Mrs Meyers understood that what we do affects others. Her radiant countenance belied the constant pain she suffered from the car wreck that left her crippled.  She delighted me with stories of teaching in a one room prairie school house.  After sharing supper with us, she would slip her harmonica out from her pocket to play us hymns. Finishing a project well brings satisfaction. Finishing a life well brings great joy and reward.

The Bible supplies many examples of people who began well and fizzled out. Matthew 25:21 reveals the ultimate desire of every child of God; to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Remembering that aim clarifies our focus and revitalizes our motivation. Aging, Yet Forever Young

Have you ever longed to keep the wisdom of your age and yet stay forever young? No one wants to go backwards, but we all want to be young – as in healthy, vibrant, strong, and beautiful. God says that very wish is what He has planned for you.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV)

The Bible describes humans as spiritual beings living in temporary tents. To be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord (2. Cor. 5:8). It is sad to have our bodies wear out but God promises new bodies that will have greater magnificence than our current ones. When we hear that, we may picture switching from an old rusty bicycle to a new sports car. The same driver, but with much more power, amenities and pizazz.  Ken Boa says that the difference will be even more dramatic than that! It will be like changing from an ordinary caterpillar to an exquisite butterfly, not to a souped up caterpillar with faster legs and a cooler color. (Read More)
